Soil recycling technology Bontelan method

A method for recycling pond bottom sediment and embankment excavation soil into high-performance ground materials.

<Overview of the Technology> The Bontelan method is a technology that repurposes bottom sediment accumulated in agricultural ponds or excavation soil from embankments, which are traditionally deemed unsuitable for use as fill, into high-performance ground materials for the renovation and reinforcement of embankments. <Purpose and Objectives of Development> Renovation of agricultural pond embankments requires high-quality soil with excellent strength and impermeability; however, it has become difficult to obtain such soil around these ponds. On the other hand, these ponds often have thick layers of bottom sediment, which contribute to a reduction in water storage capacity and deterioration of water quality, thereby hindering or degrading the functionality of the ponds. Bottom sediment typically contains a high proportion of clay and silt, and due to its generally high water content, it is not easy to dispose of. Therefore, there has been a demand for technology that actively repurposes this sediment into ground materials from environmental and economic perspectives. In response, we developed the Bontelan method by mixing fiber-based soil improvement materials called "Bonfiber" and solidifying agents into the bottom sediment of agricultural ponds, thereby adding functions such as excellent strength characteristics, high seismic resistance, and high durability. There was no earthquake damage to all embankment fill and pond embankment soil constructed using this method prior to the earthquake, and it was selected as one of six technologies recognized for their effectiveness during the Great East Japan Earthquake from a total of 165 submissions at the 2011 Construction Technology Forum.

High Cement Content Soil Improvement Agent MT Series [Construction Case] Drainage Pump Station Construction Work

This is an example of improvement using this product, which has been treated to be neutral and dust-proof, in a site where environmental considerations are necessary, specifically with leftover soil from piles.

This construction project involves the construction of a drainage pumping station. During the pile driving using the Nakabori pile method, high-water-content clay soil was generated, so we were considering a simple treatment method. Additionally, consideration for the surrounding environment was an important issue at this site. Therefore, a neutral and dust-proof treated high-water-content clay soil modifier, MT-2, was adopted. After improving the soil with this product, it was immediately transported to a temporary storage area by dump truck. The sand-mixed silt layer had a water content ratio of 50%. We would like to introduce examples of the construction of the high-cement-content soil improvement agent MT series. This work involves creating improved soil using a self-propelled soil improvement machine. Until now, the challenge has been that high-water-content mud could not be fed into the self-propelled soil improvement machine. Therefore, as a primary treatment, we improved it with MT-2, resulting in a property that could be fed into the self-propelled soil improvement machine. Subsequently, the MT-2 improved soil was further treated with quicklime as a secondary treatment using the self-propelled soil improvement machine. The MT series high water content soil improvement agent has been registered in the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Construction Bureau's "New Technology Information Database."

On March 13, the "New Technology Information Database" operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Construction Bureau registered the high water content soil improvement agent MT series. The bureau aims to achieve efficient and effective construction, including cost reduction, by sharing information on excellent new technologies developed in the private sector and actively utilizing them in the projects it undertakes. To this end, it has established the "New Technology Evaluation and Selection Guidelines," which accept proposals from developers of new technologies and gather information. From the new technologies proposed, those expected to be effective in the bureau's projects are selected and compiled as the "New Technology Information Database" for information provision. In the process of registration, the product underwent rigorous examination for about a year, including modifications to the application and hearings. It is the first company from Yamagata Prefecture to be registered in this database. In the future, this product will be actively utilized in construction projects ordered by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Construction Bureau. We would like to introduce a case study of the MT series high cement content soil improvement agent. This project involves the construction of a tunnel in an urban area using the NATM method. The wash water from the ready-mix concrete trucks used on site contained slurry and needed to be regularly transported off-site. However, the site was narrow, and it was difficult to secure a vacuum truck for an extended period. Therefore, MT-2 was adopted due to its characteristics of low additive amount and immediate transport capability. After improving the mud with this product, it was transported to the designated disposal site via a standard 10-ton dump truck, passing through public roads.

This construction project involves dredging sediment accumulated in the river to secure the riverbed. The site has a very narrow work yard, and there was no space to temporarily store and air-dry the dredged sediment. Initially, lime-based materials were considered, but concerns arose regarding securing storage space and the potential for dust dispersion to nearby areas.
